Creating an Adaptive Artist Signature
Adaptability is so important to me. I didn't want my art to be selfish. I didn't want to use a signature that looked like a signature, leaving no room for buyer interpretation.
Even though as the artist, it is my vision in the paintings; I never want my way to be the highway. What my art means to me may strike an entirely different cord for another. I wanted my signature to look like another mark on the canvas. That way even though I allocate the "default" orientation of the piece, it is malleable to the buyer's space and vision.
So how did I decide on my mark?
Well it definitely helps that I have a Graphic Design qualification behind me with a passion for branding specifically. I could spend a long time on here speaking to the value of branding, logos and marks and what it does for your goals.
My main tips would be:
- Focus on what you want your brand to represent and the usability.
- Do market research and SMART goals for your brand (if you don't know what this is, google it and you will find a million results).
- Understand the truth of your brand.
- DO NOT do what is on trend for the sake of it.
- Focus on the spacing and alignment of your mark.
There are so many elements of branding that should be considered when creating your mark. If you're ever in doubt, treat it as any other logo and consult a professional designer, and remember, with design..... you absolutely get what you pay for.
